About St Lucia
St Lucia is a riverside suburb of Brisbane, on a peninsula formed by a bend in the Brisbane River about 7 km south-west of the city centre. The area was once known as Indooroopilly Pocket, and sugar plantations operated there from the 1860s. In 1882 landowner William Alexander Wilson renamed his Coldridge plantation St Lucia after his birthplace in the West Indies, and the suburb was subdivided for housing in 1883. The main campus of the University of Queensland occupies the suburb's eastern end.
