West End is an inner southern suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, situated approximately 2.9 kilometres southwest of the central business district on a peninsula formed by a bend in the Brisbane River. The area's Aboriginal name, Kurilpa, means "place of water rats," referring to the bush rats hunted in the dense riverside rainforest that once covered the area. The name "West End" is believed to derive from the fashionable district of London. Originally a farming district in the mid-nineteenth century, Boundary Street marked the western limit of the colonial Town of Brisbane. After World War II, large-scale Greek migration earned the suburb the nickname "Little Athens," while Vietnamese immigrants further diversified the community from the late 1980s. Notable landmarks include the heritage-listed Kurilpa Library (1929), the 1912 Gas Stripping Tower in Davies Park, and Musgrave Park.
