About Newmarket
Newmarket is an inner-northwestern suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, located approximately 5.1 kilometres by road from the Brisbane CBD. Originally known as "The Three Mile Scrub" due to its distance from the city centre, the suburb takes its name from the livestock saleyards relocated from Normanby around 1880. Primarily residential, Newmarket features many heritage-listed Queenslander-style homes, along with notable landmarks including St James' Anglican Church (1901), Newmarket State School (1904), and a World War II air raid shelter on Enoggera Road. Enoggera Creek forms the suburb's southern boundary, containing a linear park and bikeway. The suburb is served by Newmarket railway station on the Ferny Grove line and has a shopping centre opened in 2005 on the corner of Newmarket and Enoggera Roads, near the historic Newmarket Hotel established in 1897.
