About Hendra

Hendra is an inner-northern suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, located approximately six kilometres north-east of the central business district. The name derives from the suburb's railway station, established in 1882 on the Eagle Farm racecourse line, and is a traditional Cornish word meaning "ancient hamlet," likely bestowed by Queensland Railway Commissioner Francis Curnow. Originally a farming district producing citrus, grapes, and pineapples, Hendra developed a strong connection to the neighbouring Eagle Farm and Doomben racecourses, with backyard horse stables a feature throughout the twentieth century. The suburb is characterised by its leafy streets lined with jacaranda and royal poinciana trees, its Queenslander-style homes, and its proximity to Brisbane Airport. Kedron Brook runs through the area, providing walking and cycling paths. In 1994, the Hendra virus — a deadly equine pathogen — was first identified in the suburb, taking its name from the locality.
