About Russell Island
Russell Island is the largest of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands in Queensland, in the City of Redland between the mainland and North Stradbroke Island, known by its traditional Aboriginal name Canaipa. Surveyed and named in 1839 by Robert Dixon after Lord John Russell, the island was settled by Europeans from 1866, with farmers and oystermen among the first inhabitants. After 1906 a village called Jacksonville grew up on its western side with a sawmill and a pineapple canning factory, and in 2015 the Queensland Government adopted Canaipa as an alternative name for the island.
