About Belmont (Qld)
Belmont is an outer suburb located approximately 12 kilometres east-southeast of the Brisbane CBD in Queensland, Australia. The suburb takes its name from Belmont House, built circa 1860 by Colonel August Bernecker, derived from the French "Bellemont" meaning "beautiful mountain". The area's history stretches back to Aboriginal occupation, with a corroboree ground on the banks of Bulimba Creek and mineral springs near Mount Petrie serving as important gathering sites. Mount Petrie, rising to 169 metres in the south of the suburb, was used as a landmark by early European settlers. The Gateway Motorway and Old Cleveland Road intersect within Belmont, and much of the suburb retains undeveloped bushland alongside large rural properties and residential estates. The Belmont Shooting Complex, operated by the SSAA, is a notable facility in the area.
