About Kanahooka
Kanahooka is a residential suburb in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, situated on the western foreshore of Lake Illawarra approximately 8 kilometres south of Wollongong. Named after Kana Hooka, an Aboriginal chief of the Five Islanders group who controlled territories from Mullet Creek to Killys Creek, the suburb was historically significant for the Dapto Smelting Works which operated from 1895 to 1905 processing ores from Broken Hill and Western Australia.
