About Koonawarra
Koonawarra is a suburb of Wollongong on the western shore of Lake Illawarra in New South Wales, approximately 16 kilometres south of the Wollongong CBD. The name derives from the Dharawal Aboriginal word "gkoonawarra", meaning "a high point of land with smooth, round stones", though it has also been translated as "swan". The area was among the first five colonial land grants in the Illawarra, with 1,300 acres granted to Richard Brooks in 1816 under the name "Exmouth". The property later formed part of Henry Osborne's central Illawarra estate before residential development began in the 1960s.
