About Kurri Kurri
Kurri Kurri is a town in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, in the Cessnock local government area, the largest of a group of former coal-mining towns on the South Maitland Coalfields. Founded by proclamation in 1902 to serve the Stanford Merthyr and Pelaw Main collieries, it is described as the first town in Australia fully planned before anything was built. The town hosts an annual Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival celebrating the 1950s and 1960s and is known as mainland Australia's largest mural town, with more than 60 outdoor murals each hiding a kookaburra.
