About The Patch
The Patch is a small hillside suburb in the Dandenong Ranges, 39 kilometres east of Melbourne in the Shire of Yarra Ranges. It was named in the 1860s after a patch of mountain ash trees that grew in just one part of the forest. During the depression of the 1890s the land was divided into small farming selections for unemployed city families under the Settlement on Lands Act, and berry growing later flourished in the district, supplying the jam industry around nearby Monbulk. The suburb remains rural, with a community hall, general store, primary school and commercial nurseries among its scattered houses.
