About Selby
Selby is a semi-rural suburb about 37 km east of Melbourne in the Shire of Yarra Ranges, a couple of kilometres east of Belgrave in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges. It grew around the narrow-gauge railway to Gembrook, whose station opened in 1904 and was named after a local landowner and Shire president, George W. Selby. After the line was blocked by a landslide in 1953, the section through Selby reopened in 1962 as the Puffing Billy tourist railway, and the town remains a stopping place on the scenic line.
