About Smiths Gully
Smiths Gully is a rural town in the southern foothills of the Kinglake Ranges, about 34 km north-east of Melbourne in the Shire of Nillumbik. It grew out of the Caledonia gold diggings, where gold was found in 1854 and up to 3,000 miners worked the gullies; the town is named after Samuel Smith, a butcher from nearby St Andrews whose slaughterhouse stood beside the creek. The 1860s Queenstown Cemetery, a rare private burial ground, survives from the mining days, and a heritage trail follows the old diggings to St Andrews.
