About St Andrews (Vic.)
St Andrews is a town in the Shire of Nillumbik in Victoria, about 46 km north-east of Melbourne and 10 km from Hurstbridge. Proclaimed as Queenstown in 1861, it grew as one of the earliest goldfields in the district, with around 3,000 miners by 1855, and later took the name of St Andrews after its Scottish diggers. The Saturday alternative market, held on the village reserve since 1971, draws visitors from across Melbourne, and the town became known for its counter-culture and mud-brick homes from the 1970s.
