About Castlemaine
Castlemaine is a town in the Goldfields region of central Victoria, about 123 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 39 kilometres from Bendigo. It grew rapidly as a gold-rush boom town after gold was found at Specimen Gully in 1851, at the heart of the Mount Alexander diggings, one of the world's richest shallow alluvial goldfields, and was named for Viscount Castlemaine, uncle of the chief goldfields commissioner, Captain William Wright. Today it is the administrative centre of the Shire of Mount Alexander and is known for its well-preserved gold-rush-era buildings and its arts and heritage scene.
