About Great Western
Great Western is a town on the Western Highway in the east of Victoria's Wimmera region, 16 kilometres south-east of Stawell and 19 kilometres north of Ararat, in the Shire of Northern Grampians. Settled by sheep graziers in the 1840s and opened up by the gold rush, its post office dates from 1858. It is best known as the historical heart of the Grampians wine region: Joseph Best planted vineyards here in 1865, and later owners Hans Irvine and then Benno Seppelt built a reputation for sparkling wine, with Seppelt's underground cellars dug by unemployed gold miners stretching over three kilometres.
