About Norval
Norval is a small rural locality in the Ararat Rural City of Victoria, about 188 kilometres west of Melbourne near the Grampians ranges. Formerly known as Opossum Gully, the area saw a gold rush around 1856 when teamster Richard Butters accidentally unearthed gold at Funnel Hill, opening the Opossum Gully Lead. The Spring Lead Cemetery, established in the late 1860s, contains early stone and cast iron grave markers, and the cleared, gently undulating landscape of open grazing country sits within Djab Wurrung country.
