About Upwey
Upwey is a suburb of Melbourne about 33 km east of the central business district, in the Dandenong Ranges, on the Belgrave railway line. Known as Mast Gully in the 1800s, after the ship masts cut from its gullies in 1850, the town grew along the route of the former narrow-gauge Puffing Billy line, which was converted to suburban electric rail in the late 1950s. The Dandenong Ranges National Park lies immediately to the north, with mountain ash forests, lyrebirds and the Sherbrooke Falls, and the suburb is home to the Burrinja Cultural Centre.
