About Upper Ferntree Gully

Upper Ferntree Gully is a suburb of Melbourne about 32 kilometres east of the central business district, at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges. It developed as a separate township only after the railway from Ringwood reached it in 1889, and its station became the starting point of the narrow-gauge Puffing Billy line to Gembrook, making the suburb a popular gateway for holidaymakers visiting the hills. Upper Ferntree Gully sits on the southern boundary of the Dandenong Ranges National Park, whose Ferntree Gully section, first reserved in 1882, includes the famous 1,000 Steps walking track built in commemoration of the Kokoda Track. The area was originally the country of the Wurundjeri people.
