About Berkeley
Berkeley is a residential suburb on the northern shore of Lake Illawarra in Wollongong, about 92 km south of Sydney. Originally a farming and fishing community, it became a major public housing area after World War II and is best known as the site of Nan Tien Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere, opened in 1995. The suburb features lakeside parklands, jetties and sports facilities backed by the Illawarra escarpment foothills.
