About Karama
Karama is a northern suburb of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, located approximately 14 kilometres from the Darwin central business district on the traditional Country and waterways of the Larrakia people. The suburb's name is derived from an Aboriginal tribe, following a 1964 recommendation by Douglas Lockwood that tribal names be used for Darwin's suburbs. Developed primarily in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Karama is bordered by Malak, Marrara, Leanyer and Knuckey Lagoon. Notable features include the Karama Shopping Plaza, several primary and secondary schools, and Brazil Crescent, which commemorates Robert Brazil, a survivor of the SS Gothenburg shipwreck of 1875.
