About Henderson
Henderson is a suburb of Perth in the City of Cockburn, located about 30 kilometres southwest of the Perth CBD on the shores of Cockburn Sound. The area was resumed by the Commonwealth Government in 1915 for defence purposes, and the Henderson Naval Base, named after Reginald Henderson, was partially constructed between 1913 and 1920 before being cancelled and eventually replaced by HMAS Stirling in 1978. The Australian Marine Complex on Cockburn Sound is one of the largest shipbuilding precincts in Australia, containing dry dock facilities and the country's second largest ship-lift, with companies including ASC, Austal, BAE Systems Australia, and Civmec operating in the complex. The suburb also contains the heritage-listed Naval Base Shacks, 173 privately owned holiday shacks on leased crown land dating from 1933.
