About Coogee (WA)
Coogee is a southern coastal suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Cockburn. Situated approximately 7 kilometres south of Fremantle, it overlooks Cockburn Sound with views of Garden Island, Carnac Island, and Rottnest Island. The suburb takes its name from Lake Coogee, derived from the Nyoongar word "Kou-gee" meaning "body of water," recorded in 1841 by surveyor Thomas Watson. The lake was originally named Lake Munster after Prince William, Earl of Munster. The area's first European settlement was Thomas Peel's ill-fated 1829 colony at Clarence near Woodman Point. The historic Coogee Hotel, built in 1898 and heritage-listed in 2001, was reopened as a restaurant in 2022. Nearby Woodman Point features a former World War II munitions jetty and preserved storage facilities within a reserve popular for fishing and picnicking. The Coogee Beach area includes a jetty and shark net enclosure.
