About Ferndale (WA)

Ferndale is a suburb in the City of Canning, approximately 15 kilometres southeast of the Perth central business district. Bounded by the Canning River to the north and Bannister Creek to the southwest, the area was covered in low scrub forest before residential development began in the late 1960s and 1970s. The name was approved in 1965, chosen by developers over the City of Canning's preferred choice of Shearnstead, and references the area's fern-like vegetation and river valley topography. The Canning River Regional Park extends along the northern boundary.
