About Woodhouse

Woodhouse is a rural locality in the Warrnambool and South West region of Victoria, located about 12 kilometres northeast of Penshurst in the Southern Grampians Shire. The Woodhouse squatting run was first taken up by Adolphus Sceales in March 1848, and the bluestone homestead was built in 1857 and extended in 1868. Under the World War Two Soldier Settlement Scheme, the Woodhouse station yielded 25 blocks for returned servicemen, and the Woodhouse-Nareeb Soldiers Memorial Hall was built in 1955 and dedicated by Sister Vivian Bullwinkel, the sole survivor of the Banka Island massacre. The hall is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
