About Tahara

Tahara is a locality in south-west Victoria, shared between the Shire of Glenelg and Shire of Southern Grampians, about 330 kilometres west of Melbourne. It was named after the Tahara pastoral run, taken up in 1838 on both sides of the Wannon River, the name thought to derive from an Aboriginal word describing a spring. The township reserve was gazetted in 1869, the Waterloo Hotel opened in about 1865, and the heritage-listed St Peter's Anglican Church was dedicated in 1881.
