About Merino
Merino is a town in the Western District of Victoria, in the Shire of Glenelg on the road between Casterton and Portland. The district was first settled in 1837, when Francis Henty stocked his Merino Downs run with Merino sheep, giving the town its name. Known early on as Paddy's Waterholes, the township was surveyed in 1857, gained a railway station on the Branxholme to Casterton line in 1884, and served the surrounding dairying and wool district until the line closed in 1977.
