About Cobden
Cobden is a town about 200 kilometres south-west of Melbourne in Victoria's Western District, at the southern edge of the volcanic Lakes and Craters Country. It was settled in the 1840s by the Scottish doctor Daniel Curdie, who called the site Lovely Banks; the town was renamed at its 1861 survey in honour of the English free-trade advocate Richard Cobden. Dairy farming shapes the district, which opened Victoria's first cheese and butter factory in 1888, now the Fonterra plant that is Australia's largest milk-drying facility. A railway from Camperdown through Cobden to Timboon operated from 1892 until 1987, and its route is now a walking trail.
