About Rochester (Vic.)
Rochester is a town on the Campaspe River in central-northern Victoria, about 180 km north of Melbourne, between Bendigo and Echuca. Named after Dr John Pearson Rowe, who kept a hotel on the site, it was gazetted in 1855 and reached by railway from Bendigo in 1864. It was the birthplace of the champion cyclist Sir Hubert Opperman, celebrated with a museum and statue, and suffered its worst flood on record in January 2011, when around 80 per cent of the town was inundated.
