About Stuart Mill
Stuart Mill is a small town in north-western Victoria on the Sunraysia Highway, in the Shire of Northern Grampians, about 22 km south of St Arnaud. It began as a gold-mining settlement after alluvial gold was discovered in 1861, and a township was gazetted in 1865 as 'Stuartmill'. The town boomed on the back of 1860s mining speculation, when estimates put its population as high as 7,500, before activity declined in the 1870s. Today it is a quiet farming community with relics of its gold-mining past.
