About Rainbow
Rainbow is a town in the Shire of Hindmarsh in north-west Victoria, about 400 kilometres from Melbourne. It grew around a railway extension completed in 1899 and was soon nicknamed the Metropolis of the Mallee for its importance to the wheat industry, with grain silos still dominating the skyline. The town lies between Victoria's largest freshwater lake, Lake Hindmarsh, to the south, and the Ramsar-listed Lake Albacutya and Wyperfeld National Park to the north, making it a base for birdwatching.
