About Merbein

Merbein is a town in the Rural City of Mildura in north-western Victoria, 12 km north-west of Mildura on the Calder Highway near the Murray River crossing to Curlwaa. It is Victoria's most northerly town and one of the state's first government-owned pumped irrigation settlements, established in 1909 and originally known as White Cliffs for its river cliffs. The name was intended to be 'Merebin' but was mistakenly registered as Merbein. The town sits at the heart of the Sunraysia irrigation district, growing grapes, citrus and vegetables, and is home to the historic Mildura Wines winery.
