About Birdwoodton

Birdwoodton is a rural locality in the Sunraysia region of north-west Victoria, about 4 km south of Merbein and close to Mildura. In 1917 blocks were made available there for farming by discharged soldiers, and the soldier-settlers named the district Birdwood in honour of General Sir William Birdwood, commander of the ANZAC forces at Gallipoli; the name was changed to Birdwoodton during 1920-21. The small farms produced irrigated dried fruit, mainly currants and raisins.
