About Kiata

Kiata is a small town in the Wimmera region of north-west Victoria, on the Western Highway and railway line about 13 kilometres east of Nhill. Its name is thought to derive from an Aboriginal word describing summer heat. The township was surveyed in 1876 and the railway arrived in 1887; wheat farming shaped the district, and the Little Desert National Park and the Kiata Lowan Sanctuary, established for the mallee fowl, lie nearby.
