About Antwerp

Antwerp is a locality in the Wimmera region of western Victoria, on the Dimboola–Rainbow Road about 14 km north of Dimboola, with the Wimmera River running just to the west. It was named by pastoralist Horatio Ellerman after his birthplace, the Belgian city of Antwerp, after he and George Shaw took up land for sheep grazing in the 1840s. In the 1880s the Eucalyptus Mallee Oil Company began distilling eucalyptus oil in the town, and a railway from Dimboola reached Antwerp in 1894. The restored ruins of the nearby Ebenezer Mission are now the locality's main attraction.
