About Dimboola

Dimboola is a town in the Shire of Hindmarsh in the Wimmera region of western Victoria, located 334 kilometres northwest of Melbourne on the Wimmera River. Previously known as Nine Creeks, the name derives from Sinhalese dimbula meaning Land of Figs, chosen by surveyor John George Winchester Wilmot who had lived in Ceylon. The town was surveyed in 1862 and gazetted in April 1863. Dimboola is the setting of the play and film Dimboola by Jack Hibberd and artist Sidney Nolan painted Dimboola landscapes while stationed there during World War II. The Dimboola Memorial Secondary College is the only purpose-built memorial secondary college in Victoria. Pink Lake, the Little Desert National Park and the Wimmera River are nearby natural features. The Overland rail service between Melbourne and Adelaide stops at Dimboola station. The Dimboola Show is held the third Thursday in October. The traditional owners are the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagik nations. The town had a population of 1,424 at the 2016 census.
