About Maddingley
Maddingley is a suburb of Bacchus Marsh in the Shire of Moorabool, Victoria, situated on the south bank of the Werribee River approximately 50 kilometres west of Melbourne. Originally a farming hamlet separate from Bacchus Marsh, it is believed to have been named after Madingley in Cambridgeshire, England. Notable landmarks include Maddingley Park, a nine-hectare riverside reserve featuring the Nieuwesteeg Heritage Rose Garden and a tennis clubhouse originally built as a courthouse in the 1850s; the heritage-listed chicory kiln on Taverner Street, dating from 1885; and the Maddingley brown coal mine, one of Victoria's largest open-cut lignite operations. Bacchus Marsh Grammar School's Maddingley campus and the Maddingley General Cemetery, established in 1858, are also located within the suburb.
