About Cairnlea

Cairnlea is a suburb of Melbourne about 17 km north-west of the CBD in the City of Brimbank, between St Albans and Deer Park. It was built from the late 1990s on the site of the former Albion Explosives Factory, a munitions works established in 1939 that operated until the late 1980s. The suburb was laid out around open space and artificial lakes, and the heritage-listed Black Powder Mill of 1939 survives as a remnant of the explosives works.
