About Cardinia
Cardinia is a town on the south-eastern fringe of Melbourne, about 52 km from the city, between Pakenham and Tooradin. Its name comes from an Aboriginal expression meaning 'look towards the rising sun'. Cattle runs occupied the district from 1838, and the town grew around a school opened in 1874 and a post office in 1881. Cardinia Creek, which gives the Shire its name, was once the historic boundary between the Port Phillip District and Gippsland.
