About Officer South

Officer South is a suburb and rural locality in the south-eastern growth corridor of Melbourne, Victoria, about 50 kilometres from the central business district in the Shire of Cardinia. It is named after the Officer family, early settlers of the district, and lies south of the town of Officer. The Officer district was settled from 1846, when James Lecky established the Gin Gin Bin pastoral run on Cardinia Creek, and later developed around timber-getting, brickmaking and orchards, with gold discovered in the nearby hills in 1870. The area is on the traditional lands of the Boon Wurrung people, custodians of the Kulin nation.
