About Warburton (Vic.)
Warburton is a town on the upper Yarra River in the Yarra Ranges, about 76 km east of Melbourne, at the edge of the mountain forests. Gold found at Yankee Jim's Creek in 1859 drew settlers, and the township was renamed in 1863 after the police magistrate Charles Warburton Carr. The railway from Lilydale opened in 1901, built mainly to carry timber from forests that at one stage supported more than 60 sawmills. Warburton is now a popular base for forest walks, including the Warburton Rail Trail and the nearby Redwood Forest.
