About Healesville
Healesville is a town on the Watts River, a tributary of the Yarra, about 64 km north-east of Melbourne in the Yarra Ranges, on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people. Surveyed in 1864 and named after Richard Heales, a former Premier of Victoria, it grew as a service centre on the Yarra Track to the Woods Point goldfields. Healesville is best known for the Healesville Sanctuary, a wildlife park that pioneered the breeding of platypuses in captivity.
