About Burnley
Burnley is an inner-city suburb of Melbourne, about 4 km east of the central business district in the City of Yarra, bounded on its southern and eastern sides by the Yarra River and named after an early resident, William Burnley. The riverside Burnley Gardens were established in 1862, and Australia's first School of Horticulture opened there in 1891, with the site now the Burnley campus of the University of Melbourne. Developed mostly during the Edwardian boom, it was once known as the 'Toorak of Richmond'.
