About South Yarra

South Yarra is an inner-city suburb of Melbourne about 4 km south-east of the central business district, with Punt Road dividing the city between Stonnington and Melbourne. Settled in the late 1830s on the land of the Yalukit-willam people, it grew into a wealthy residential district, and its grand houses include Como House, built in 1847 and now a National Trust property. The South Yarra end of Chapel Street is the shopping strip's most fashionable stretch, Toorak Road branches from it, and the suburb also holds Fawkner Park, some of Melbourne's best-preserved Victorian terraces, and the heritage-listed Melbourne High School.
