About Hawthorn (Vic.)
Hawthorn is an inner suburb of Melbourne, 6 kilometres east of the central business district in the City of Boroondara. Its name, gazetted in 1840, may come from Governor Charles La Trobe's comment on native shrubs resembling flowering hawthorn, or from the bluestone house The Hawthorns built in 1845 on Creswick Street. The Invergowrie mansion, built about 1850 for James Frederick Palmer, gave Burwood Road its name, and the surrounding estate was subdivided as Saint James Estate.
