About Sandringham (Vic.)
Sandringham is a bayside suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, 16 kilometres south of the central business district on the shore of Port Phillip Bay, within the City of Bayside. The area was first known as Gipsy Village, a fishing community, before being renamed Sandringham in 1888 after the Prince of Wales's royal residence in England. The arrival of the railway in 1887 made it a popular beach resort, and today the town centre and the Sandringham Yacht Club sit near Picnic Point on the foreshore.
