About Black Rock (Vic.)
Black Rock is a bayside suburb of Melbourne, 18 kilometres south-east of the central business district in the City of Bayside. The suburb is named after Black Rock House, a grand residence built by the pastoralist and politician Charles Ebden in 1856, itself named after Blackrock in Dublin. Its shoreline features the iron-stained cliffs of Red Bluff and Half Moon Bay, whose boat haven is sheltered by the hulk of HMVS Cerberus, Australia's first ironclad warship, sunk as a breakwater in 1926. Black Rock was connected to Sandringham by tram from 1919 until 1956, and its beach and yacht club remain popular today.
