About Hampton (Vic.)
Hampton is a bayside suburb of Melbourne about 14 km south-east of the central city, on Port Phillip Bay in the City of Bayside, between Brighton and Sandringham. The area began as market gardens that became day-trip destinations for bathers from the 1850s, and the railway reached it in 1887; the station, first called Retreat, was renamed after Dyas Hampton, a local market gardener. Hampton Street is now a busy shopping strip of cafés, restaurants and boutiques, and the foreshore, with its Picnic Point, is popular for swimming and snapper fishing.
