About Murrumbeena
Murrumbeena is a suburb about 13 kilometres southeast of Melbourne, in the City of Glen Eira. Its name, an adaptation of an Aboriginal word, was adopted when the railway station opened in 1879, and the district was once known for its market gardens and orchards. It became a centre of studio pottery through Merric Boyd and Doris Gough, whose "Open Country" workshop began in 1908, and later the Arthur Merric Boyd pottery in Neerim Road, established in 1944 with John Perceval and Peter Herbst. A.V. Jennings' Beauville estate of 1934 began the suburb's residential growth.
