About Violet Town

Violet Town is a town on Honeysuckle Creek in the Strathbogie Shire of north-eastern Victoria, about 174 kilometres north-east of Melbourne on the Hume Highway. Surveyed in 1838, it is the oldest inland surveyed town in Victoria still in existence, established on the old Sydney road where Major Thomas Mitchell camped in 1836 and named Violet Ponds for the wild violets that grew there. The town grew as a coaching stop and gained a railway in 1873, and is known as the home town of Jesse and Ella Hooper of the rock band Killing Heidi.
