About Tintaldra
Tintaldra is a small town on the upper Murray River in north-east Victoria, within the Shire of Towong, about 150 km east of Albury. Settled in 1837 as a cattle run, it grew from the 1850s into a river crossing point with a punt, customs house, hotel and general store, and its 1864 store still stands. A bridge replaced the punt in 1892, but when border duties ended at Federation in 1901 the town lost its customs role. Much of Tintaldra was destroyed in the Black Friday bushfires of 1939, and the river now draws fishers for trout and Murray cod.
